Tips for Maintaining Golf Cart Batteries

April 26th 2021

If you’re the owner of an electric golf car, you likely know how important it is to maintain your car’s batteries. The batteries supply power to the car, giving it the energy it needs to run. These tips for maintaining golf cart batteries will help you keep car’s batteries in top condition and extend their lifespan.

Charge Your Car’s Batteries

For optimal performance, golf car batteries need regular charging. Choose a well-ventilated space in which to charge your car’s batteries. When your car reaches 20 percent charge, its batteries should be charged for eight to ten hours using a compatible golf car charger. This can be done overnight. While you don’t need to charge your car after every single use, it’s ideal to do so if possible so your golf car is always charged and ready to go.

Use Batteries Often, but Don’t Overcharge

To extend the lifespan of your battery, use your golf car as often as possible; try to do a refresh charge every 45-60 days. If your car’s battery charger has a storage mode, this refresh process will be automatically performed every so often, keeping your battery charged and in peak condition. Remember not to overcharge your battery; this can decrease its lifespan and capacity. To avoid overcharging, try using an automatic charger.

Fill Batteries With Distilled Water

Another part of golf car battery maintenance is monitoring the water level within the battery. Check the water levels every month or two and fill as needed. When you fill your battery, only used distilled water, not tap water. Fill the battery to its fill line—too much or too little water will lead to issues with your battery and car. Only fill the car’s battery with water after it has been charged, and not before.

Keep Your Batteries Clean

Finally, keep your golf car’s batteries clean. Any corrosion on your battery’s terminals will decrease the lifespan of the battery, so take measures to avoid corrosion and remove any that appears. Clean corrosion from your battery’s terminals using a toothbrush with some water and a little bit of baking soda, or a battery safe cleaning solution. After cleaning, coat your battery with an anti-corrosion solution to protect it from further harm. When you’re not cleaning them, keep your battery’s terminals and covers clean and dry, and be sure to regularly check your battery for wear.
